A Guide to Interactive Publishing Part III – How to Teach with Your Interactive Book

How to teach, inspire, and share what you know through interactive books — built in the SOE PublishingLab Makerspace.

Having the platform is one thing. Knowing how to design learning experiences that actually work is another. Here is a framework for turning your expertise into a book that teaches — step by step.

A Guide to Interactive Publishing Part III - How to Teach with Your Interactive Book

1.Start with the Outcome, Not the Content: Before you write a single sentence, ask: what should my reader be able to do after reading this? Great teaching begins with clear outcomes. If your reader is a new employee, maybe they need to handle a customer complaint confidently. If your reader is a child, maybe they learn to count to ten. Start there, and work backwards.

2.Chunk Your Knowledge into Chapters That Breathe: The book format is your friend here. It imposes natural structure. Divide your knowledge into chapters of digestible size. Each chapter should introduce one idea, develop it, and then invite the reader to engage with it through an activities or reflection prompts before moving on.

3.Layer in Interactive Features Purposefully: Not every page needs a quiz. Not every chapter needs a game. The SOE PublishingLab makerspace gives you a rich palette, use it like a painter, not like someone throwing paint at a wall. A well-placed multiple-choice question after a dense concept gives the reader a breath, a checkpoint, a small win. A memory game at the end of a vocabulary chapter makes learning stick. Match the feature to the learning need.

4.Use Multimedia to Show What Words Cannot: Some things are genuinely better shown than described. Embed a short video demonstration instead of writing three paragraphs about it. Use an audio clip to model correct pronunciation. Insert a diagram that readers can click through. The platform supports this natively — take advantage of it.

5. Publish, Share, and Iterate: The makerspace model means your book is never truly “done” …  it is a living document. Once published, gather feedback from your readers, improve the content, add new chapters, update outdated sections. An interactive book can grow alongside your knowledge … and alongside the needs of your audience.

Chapter Ten – Who is This For? Everyone with Something to Say

SOE PublishingLab is structured to welcome creators at every scale, with three tiers of access to match where you are in your journey:

Community Makerspace – Free – Simple book layout to get started. Ideal for exploring the platform and publishing your first interactive project.

Personal Makerspace – 10-Day Free Trial – Simple or advanced book layout, printed book services, and full creative control for individual authors and educators.

Organisational Makerspace – On Demand

Scaled solutions for businesses, schools, and organisations publishing at volume or integrating with a Learning Management System.

The free Community Makerspace is the invitation — a door left wide open for anyone curious about what their knowledge might become. The Personal Makerspace adds depth and power for creators ready to build something exclusive. And the Organisational tier opens the door to institutional-scale publishing, with LMS integration for those who need to track and measure learning across teams.

Chapter Eleven – Your Story is Still Waiting

There is a version of your knowledge that sits untouched, organized in your head, occasionally spoken aloud in a workshop or a conversation, but never quite fully given to the world. That version is waiting for a form worthy of it.

The interactive book is that form. Not because it is flashy, or because technology makes everything better … but because the best kind of teaching has always been a conversation. A back-and-forth. A challenge and a response. An idea presented, then tested, then understood.

SOE PublishingLab gives you the makerspace to have that conversation at scale — with students across a continent, with customers you will never meet in person, with readers who will carry what you taught them for the rest of their lives.

The book was always meant to be more than paper. Now it finally can be.
